Victoria Villasana was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. After studying design at ITESO University in Mexico, she moved to London. There she worked as a florist and in the fashion industry.
In 2013 she began making embroidery collages with images as a hobby, putting them up on the streets of London, she became known in the street art community for her cross-culture textile imagery.
The use of embroidery is her language for female empowerment. Through textile, patterns and colour she shares stories that express the resilience of the human spirit. The dynamism in her work stems from the way the thread is left uncut, far below the frame, giving an unfinished aesthetic that mirrors our evolution, imperfection and the acceptance of change. For her it is important to use creativity as an empowering tool for healing and building bridges.
“Working with textiles makes me feel connected. Embroidery has been undervalued as just a ‘women’s craft’ – but for me it’s a form of resistance. I am influenced by the use of textiles throughout history because many cultures have used them to create a sense of belonging, building community and passing on their stories. I like to work with textiles in an intuitive, raw, and emotional way. I feel that textiles are a tactile and comforting element in our psyche that help us to connect, from the pieces made by ancient cultures to the blankets that our grandmothers used to make.”
